End Citizens United Helping Put An End To Unregulated Political Contributions

In 2010, the Supreme Court made a decision in regards to political contributions that changed the course of how elections are run. The country’s highest court turned companies into people, allowing them to contribute unlimited amounts of money, thus eliminating any transparency and accountability that is needed for honest elections. Billionaires on both sides have been trying to tip the scales of political power in their favor and it continues to get worse.

On March 1st, 2015 End Citizens United was born and is a political action committee funded by small donations from grassroots donors. The pac was created to fight back against the billionaires who are trying to rig the system. The goal of End Citizens United is to end big money and fix the system and they do that by funding pro-reform candidates, promoting ballot measures that aim to pass pro-reform laws across the country.

End Citizens United Has Surge in Funding to Start 2017

There is change going round in Washington and we aren’t just talking about that which came from the 2016 Presidential Election. The rise of Donald Trump into the office of Presidency has certainly sent a shockwave down the spine of Americans and formerly apathetic citizens who chose not to vote. The result? More people are ready to get involved in the political process. This rice in political activism has been huge in terms of the growth of a political action committee that goes by the name of End Citizens United.

End Citizens United was formulated in order to oppose the infamous 2010 Supreme Court decision that involved a conservative group named Citizens United. The goal of Citizens united at the time was, in essence, to loosen the strings of financial regulations on campaigning politicians. The goal here was to allow big corporations, dark money, and special interests to flood into the political arena and buy up whoever they wanted. You can see how this is a fundamental flaw in terms of how our democracy should work, right? End Citizens United was created by PAC President Tiffany Muller. Their goal is to make their name a reality by taking a steady, hands on approach to the political process.

End Citizens United is focused on bringing about political change in Washington from within. The PAC has been hard at work fundraising so that they can put their weight and money behind candidates who are pledging to bring about campaign finance reform as well as eventually work on proposing an amendment to overturn the Citizens United decision. Through the first quarter of 2017 activity at End Citizens United has been incredible to behold. More people than ever are leaping into the fray, ready to fight to make their voice heard in the Washington D.C. People want to have a voice in Trump’s America, even if President Trump ostensibly only cares about the big spenders that finance his campaigns.

Through the first quarter of 2017 End Citizens United saw unprecedented donations from progressives, moderates and independents all of whom shared one thing in common: they are furious at the Trump administration. Muller says that this is their way of ‘fighting back’ in order to get their voice heard in Washington D.C. Through the first three months of 2017 End Citizens United has racked up nearly $4 million in donations. The majority of these donations came in at under $12 which means that you are seeing a true grassroots movement take effect here. The goal for End Citizens United is to raise $35 million by the end of 2017 in order to prepare for the 2018 Congressional Elections where a lot will be on the line.

End Citizens United Launches The ‘Independent Investigation Now’ Campaign

End Citizens United and Every Voice have launched the “Independent Campaign Now” campaign. The two money-in-politics reform groups started the campaign just after the firing of the FBI Director James Comey. The national campaign will involve paid advertising and grassroots actions. This initiative is aimed at pressuring senators to call for an independent investigation into claims that President Donald Trump and his campaign team colluded with Russia in the team’s effort to rig the recently-concluded presidential elections. The first phase of the campaign is made up of digital ads targeting key senators, including Dean Heller (NV), Jeff Flake (AZ), Ron Johnson (WI), Steve Daines (MT), Rap Toomey (PA), Rob Portman (OH) and Lisa Murkowski (AK). Later, the digital ads will include more senators. Speaking during the launch of the ‘independent Investigation Now’ campaign, Tiffany Muller said that it is the legal right of Americans to enjoy secure and fair elections. A professionally conducted election is the basis of democracy on which America is built on. The president and executive director of End Citizens United called the Congress to immediately establish an independent commission to start investigations into the claims that Trump, in partnership with Russia, attempted to interfere with the elections.

220 members of the Congress have called for independent investigations or special prosecutor on the election rigging claims. These members are made up of Republicans, Democrats, and Independents. Moreover, about 50 members of the Congress, including Portman, Flake, and Murkowski, have expressed serious concerns following the President’s firing of FBI Director James Comey. Speaking at the same event, David Donnelly said that President Trump’s decision to fire James Comey was an attack on America’s democracy. He added that politicians should be working hard to safeguard America’s democracy, thus the need for the Senators to call for an independent investigation. Such investigations will be able to give Americans a conclusive answer on Russia’s role in the 2016 elections. Donnelly is the president and chief executive officer of Every voice. The launch of the “Independent Investigations Now” campaigns comes a few months after End Citizens United started the second phase of its campaign against big money in politics. In the first three months, the organization managed to raise over $4 million. The group hopes to collect $35 million ahead of the 2018 midterm elections. This money will be used to fund the election of senators that support the group’s agenda. The senators are Democratic candidates. According to Tiffany, over 100,000 people have made their contributions to the organization. Out of this, 40,000 are new donors. The large number of new donors speaks a lot about the public’s feeling about the 2011 supreme court ruling that allowed for the formation of super PACs. The group hopes its efforts will help in enhancing campaign-finance reforms in America through a constitutional amendment.
